Elvis' Clothes - & What Happened To Them

Postby Colin B » Wed Nov 18, 2015 11:55 am

This was a popular thread on a previous incarnation of the forum, so I thought it was worth resurrecting it here !

Hunka, hunka cash: Little Rock doctor’s Elvis jacket brings almost $60,000 at auction
By Rachel O'Neal Chaney
This article was published November 17, 2015 at 5:45 a.m.

When Dr. Billy M. Chandler was hit in the face in 1972 with a jacket worn by Elvis Presley,
he had no idea it would one day be worth almost $60,000 !

Elvis Jacket - From 1972.JPG

The Elvis Presley jacket owned by Dr. Billy M. Chandler was part of the November 7th, 2015 Icons and Idols Rock ’N’ Roll Auction
held by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Mitch Chandler wit Elvis Jacket from 1972.JPG

Mitch Chandler had this jacket, originally worn by Elvis Presley, appraised at Antiques Roadshow’s stop in Little Rock on July 25, where it was valued between $30,000 and $80,000.

My thoughts:

I don't doubt the above is a genuine Elvis-worn stage jacket, but I can't find any photographic evidence.

In the 2011 Elvis book Fashion For a King, it can be seen that he did wear this type of jacket on stage in 1972.

The white jackets had coloured side pocket flaps & a single button, all of which matched the colour of the lining of the accompanying cape !

Examples are given of pockets [& cape linings] in red, blue, green & even silver, but not gold !

Can anyone come up with a photo ?

Thanks, Brian !

Looks like they didn't have any more luck with a photo than I did

The photo that they've come up with is certainly not proof positive...

Elvis Presley Enterprises paid Colonel Parker $2 million for an estimated 35 tons of Elvis “stuff” that Parker had stored in four buildings in a Nashville suburb. It was a bargain price, considering the lot included the lost Elvis 1957 gold lamé suit. Perhaps the most iconic rock outfit in history, it alone is probably worth more than the original $2 million price tag EPE paid for the Colonel’s complete collection.

Today it is on permanent display at Graceland for all Elvis fans to see and admire.

If genuine, the jacket should show more 'wear & tear' than the trousers, because he carried on wearing it for many shows, but dropped the trousers in favour of some plain black ones after only a couple.

Did Parker actually own it, & the rest of the 35 tons ?

If not, he did well to get his $2m from the Estate !

He didn't own it. He would say he looked after it for Elvis and that his handling charge for all those years as caretaker was $2M.

He dropped his trousers (pants for the US folk) because he couldn't move on stage so well as they were heavy.

The story goes that Col Parker asked Nudie /Cohn to make this suit for Elvis. This could be a myth as another story says Elvis asked Liberace who made his jacket and would he mind if Elvis had one made. Liberace was honoured and gave Elvis Nudies details. This was in November 1956.
Now by coincidence Nudie was hired by the film studio to make Elvis' shirt he wears in the Teddy Bear scene in Loving You.

So was it Elvis or the Colonel? Take your pick. Elvis paid $10000 for it so....

Would be much better if there was a photo of him wearing them !

Are there any photos of him in pyjamas [in real life as opposed to film roles] ?

I couldn't find any !

Isn't there a sneaked pic of him sitting up in a hospital bed in the mid 70s?
