Not only do they prolong the life of the boots, but I'm convinced they make you walk livelier and with an upright posture.
When your boots are making that 'drill sergeant click', you have no choice but to walk smart.
I have a heap of riding boots, I should look into the segs, as riders scratch the bottom of their leather boots up (which is counter productive as the boots are expensive and need to look immaculate) to "break the boots in" as the specifically made boots for horse riding's soles are slippery, so that a foot is not caught in a stirrup, and therefore terrible to walk safely, on land.
