Yes, that song is certainly referred to on the side of the van.

Perhaps the overall meaning intended is that the showbiz career of Mark Knopfler, in its 'later years', is in 'Dire Straits'.

I don't think his career is in Dire Straits. He obviously isn't at the peak he was with the band, but then again, what is the measuring stick? it seems he's achieved more since than during. He recorded with Chet Atkins and Emmylou Harris. He formed the Notting Hillbillies, wrote film scores, produced albums for others, and he's still recording as a solo artist, and has recorded more albums as a solo or a collaborative artist than he did with the band. Hardly in Dire Straits.

Well, the inference was that in his 'later years' he was reduced to driving a delivery van.

Just a joke, not meant to be a serious comment on his career of late...

I see it as a clue given that it reflects the song's lyrics, not an inference, and of course it's not serious.
