Random Mini-Quiz No.2 - Solved

Postby Colin B » Thu Mar 31, 2016 12:18 pm

Random Mini-Quiz No.2

I can remember an argument raging [on another forum] about who recorded Always On My Mind first.

Was it Elvis or Brenda Lee ?

Some research found out that the recording dates were:

Brenda Lee - 22nd September, 1971

Elvis - 29th March, 1972

With later versions from Willie Nelson & The Pet Shop Boys.

However, it has since been shown that another artist recorded the 'original' version in 1970 !

And yet another recorded it between the Brenda & Elvis sessions.

So, who were these other two performers ?

B.J. Thomas' version was released only in 1996.

The other performer is Gwen McCrae but her version was released on March 1972, 3 months before Brenda Lee's version was released.

It looks like Gwen McCrae's version was originally issued as a b-side.

Check out the spelling of the title - and the title of the a-side ! :

Yeah, I thought it was one of those "answer songs" of the 60s.

It sounds like that, yes.

But it's a totally different song, not related to the Elvis one. It's on YouTube.
