Bill Giant, Bernie Baum and Florence Kaye reached their great moment of glory and inspiration with "(You're The) Devil In Disguise".

Most of the songs they supplied to Elvis were pure garbage, let's face it.

When you look up their songwriting credits, they wrote some nice songs for other people, ones I never knew were written by them.

Looking through that list, I must admit there are more acceptable songs than I remembered, although there's still a big amount of dross.

By the way, "Today, Tomorrow And Forever" as recorded by Patsy Cline in 1957 is a completely different song, written by somebody else.

I reckon they were all right, but if they got the gig to write 2 minute crappy songs to fit a movie scene, that's what they're going to do, and then laugh all the way to the bank. They didn't have the power to raise the bar.

Ramblin' rose

The song was written by Wilkin & Burch.
This song was selected for recording on the 22-08-67 session; however this recording session was cancelled. Elvis never recorded the song in the next sessions.

The original version was recorded in 1962 by Jerry Lee Lewis for Sun records. There's a clip on YouTube.
The song has nothing to do with Ramblin' rose recorded by Perry Como (1948) and Nat King Cole (1962). These are other songs.

Was it ever determined which version of "Ramblin' Rose" Elvis was looking at recording. I know there was a thread over on FECC that debated between the Jerry Lee Lewis song and the song that was popularized by Nat King Cole. My personal belief is that the version Elvis was going to do was the Nat King Cole version. The reason I say this is because if you watch some of the bonus features on the DVD / BluRay of the film about "The Wrecking Crew" they have some interviews with guitarist / arranger / producer William "Billy" Strange. In the film, Billy Strange mentions specifically that he was the one who got Nat King Cole to record "Ramblin' Rose." Billy Strange was scheduled to be the arranger for the cancelled August, 1967 sessions at RCA Hollywood.

"Ramblin' Rose" was recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis in September 1961. This recording was coupled with "I've Been Twistin'", Lewis' adaptation of Junior Parker's "Feelin' Good". Both songs were released in January 1962 as Sun 374.

This "Ramblin' Rose" was written by Marijohn Wilkin and Fred Burch.

Wilkin did co-write a few other worthy tracks, like Eddie Cochran's "Cut Across Shorty" and Ann-Margret's "I Just Don't Understand".

Burch would co-write "The Love Machine" for Elvis.
