I can't decide, in the shots from Jan 8th 1958, is he wearing a waistcoat, or a sleevless cardie?

Looks more like a 'cardicoat' to me...

I thought that initially but that is less cool, I mean it's warmer, but it's not as cool.....umm, you know what I mean.
