I'm not one who pays attention to such things, but I can't believe that this thread has had over five thousand views in just 40 days.

Maybe we should consider creating a P. J. Proby messageboard, ha ha.

Maybe Proby is a member here and he keeps looking in to see what's being said.

I spoke to my friend this evening, who knows Proby, and told her that one of the tracks on the CD isn't by him. Not sure if she's going to say anything to him.

According to an interview with Ruth Batchelor (dated 15 august 1964) she confirms PJ Proby is the singer on ALL her demo acetates inspite circulating other views denying it’s PJ Proby on certain tracks.

Living in California (West Coast) it is strange to hire a demo singer (Jimmy Breedlove) from the East Coast.

The article is somewhat of a puff piece for Proby and the statement is incorrect - for starters it is not Proby on the demo of `King of the whole wide world` which shows her statement in the article is false (at least as far as the demo's presented to Elvis are concerned - were the early Batchelor demo's re-done before being presented to Elvis?) it is also the same demo singer on `Because of love` and the other three Batchelor titles I listed, which are also clearly not Proby.

It is however Proby on the demo of `True love` (Batchelor/Roberts) which appears to be from around 1962?

The Proby demos are quite distinctive and easy to spot - `Because of love` is not one of them.

It would appear this erroneous article that has been known for years has lead several `up the garden path` with no audio evidence to support it. However the audio evidence of the 5 tracks I have mentioned shows as stated - Proby did not record all the demo's for Batchelor as delivered to Elvis.

Kevan

In a previous post (24 february 2023) you‘ve mentioned three songs written by Ruth Batchelor-Bob Roberts with another singer on the demo.

1. Sweet lady love
2. Love is all I need
3. That's the way it goes

For which recording session or movie these songs were selected?

There are more unidentified songs written this song writing team:

- The pied piper poodle in 1962;
- The answer is no! In 1963;

Is there a link with a recording session by Elvis?

At this time I have no further details on the session/s they were submitted for.

Happy go lucky me
The song is written by Sid Wayne and Ben Weisman and probably submitted for songspot # 3.

The song is not mentioned in the pre-selection for the movie Roustabout dated 13 january 1964.
In the pre-selection dated 27 january 1964 the song is not mentioned either.
This means the song is rejected in earlier selections.

In the songselection for the movie dated 7 february 1964 is no songtitle mentioned for the songspot # 3 (scene 12).

According to the final songselection by Hal Wallis dated 19 february 1964 is selected for songspot # 3 scene 12:

Wheels on my heels (Tepper-Bennett) – sung while riding a motorcycle after being bailed out of jail.

I just got to listen to it and i'm disappointed
it's a mix of MP3s and low quality audio Its home laptop job imo.

I think that's expected. I doubt very much anyone has access to the actual original tapes.

Being a Bear Family release, I doubt it's been taken from substandard sources, unless there's nothing else available.

BF it's no cheapo label.

If you have a listen to the sound files, some of them are not top notch.

That means there's no better source available. But BF is not a "laptop job" label, that's for sure. We are getting so used to crap releases that we tend to think everybody works like that. It's kinda sad, if you ask me.

I know they're not. It's likely that's the best they could get. Hopefully the booklet with the CD will tell us more.
