I don't know if it's true or not, but it does fit with something I read years ago [somewhere] that a very young Elvis sang in some local church which was broadcast on air.

Well, one bit doesn't fit & that's a reference to 'acetate records' - where would the poor Presley family have had those made ?

My recollected 'church' bit would have had him singing live.

I agree, I don't believe a word of it either. I doubt that in 1947 a 12-year-old Elvis recorded an acetate which was then distributed to a disc jockey out of state and that 5 years later Gladys would follow up with a thank you letter.

I’m of the same opinion, and it’s way too late for any positive proof unless that acetate miraculously appeared… but would we even recognise his twelve year old voice?

I also thought I read or heard from one of the Jordanaires that Elvis didn't even know "How great thou art" in 1966.

He had to be taught the song. Maybe I am remembering another song, but I thought it was the one in question.
