My lucky day - Elvis score!

Postby Lonely Summer » Tue Nov 26, 2024 7:10 am

I walked into a local book and music shop tonight, and found a huge collection of sealed Elvis vinyl - all going for $3.99 to $5.99. I hadn't planned on buying much, but I couldn't pass this up. If the albums are still there next week, I will buy more, but for today, I walked away with: Something For Everybody, Spinout, He Touched Me, Separate Ways, Promised Land and Today. Most of these are to replace old copies where either the vinyl is not in great shape, or the cover is showing wear.
A lot of the vinyl at this store is way overpriced, so is this a sign that demand for Elvis records is down? I'm not complaining. I'd be very happy if I came across a bunch of sealed Beatles albums for $3.99.

Here's a couple other things I picked up recently; Elvis by Jerry Hopkins; and a copy of Harum Scarum with a photo enclosed. $1.99 at Value Village. Also found a Flaming Star EP at Goodwill; no record inside, but the jacket itself is valuable enough. And because there was no record inside, they let me have the sleeve for free.

Prices are down in general. People these days prefer streaming above owning a physical grammophone record or Compact Disc.

Well, the same store is regularly asking $20 and above for beat up old copies of Beatles albums, making me glad I bought Beatles vinyl back when nobody wanted it.

Nice findings, LS.

I recently found a cheap NM copy of the original 70s 2-LP release of The Beatles' Star-Club recordings. Great stuff.

Also, I found this cute 2004 one-song promo CD for 0,50 euros :

Okay, here's a puzzling thing. The copy of Separate Ways I picked up - the cover says RCA Camden, but I opened it today, and the record is Pickwick! Strange! And the Pickwick record has the same CAS catalog number as the RCA cover. Is this common? I think I saw someone on You Tube open a sealed Camden, only to find a Pickwick record inside.
The other thing that struck me as odd: the back cover of the original He Touched Me listed all of Elvis' "sacred" recordings; this copy has omitted all the songs on the Camden/Pickwick album You'll Never Walk Alone. And the photo of His Hand in Mine is from the budget reissue of that album, with Elvis' face in the clowds, instead of the piano photo. Now I feel like I should keep both!

On the excellent site of discogs you can see all variations of records and sleeves for a certain title.
Next to that, since sleeves are printed and records are pressed at different locations, it is possible when one of the two runs out, you get a combination of 2 different printings / pressings.
Camden was originally the "cheap" label of RCA. Later on this label was sold to the PIckwick Company, who re-released the Elvis titles.

It was Ed over at the King's Court that I saw opening some Camden albums, only to find Pickwick records inside.
And this copy of Separate Ways does not have the photo inside.
I'm gonna go back to that store this weekend and see what other stuff I can grab - if it's still there.

I went back today and got three more - a sealed reissue of Double Trouble; and 60's pressings in NM to VG+ condition of Kissin' Cousins and Fun in Acapulco. None of these are top tier Elvis IMO, but for $5.99 each, it's a good deal. The day is coming soon when I will have all the albums released in Elvis' lifetime; but collecting Elvis will never end, because the compilations and reissues never end.
