Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller on "What's My Line ?" - 1958

Postby Mister Moon » Sun Jan 24, 2016 1:51 am

Inspired by OnStage55's topic on Aaron Schroeder, here's a link to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's 1958 appearance on "What's My Line?", a similar TV show.

This was aired on Sunday, March 9, 1958 (CBS), just as one of their compositions. "Don't", was riding high on the charts as sung by Elvis.

Unfortunately, Jerry and Mike had to deal with the condescension of most of the present characters, especially coming from the disgusting Dorothy Kilgallen, gossip journalist and Johnnie Ray girlfriend.

This "incident" is even mentioned in "Hound Dog", their 2009 autobiography :

Yes, I enjoyed it too. Now who wouldn't have heard of them by 1957, especially people in show biz?

Thanks !

Yes, I thought the same thing when I first watched this clip, but reading Leiber's commentary on this program (see above link) I realized I may have been mistaken. :)

Man, I figure some of them cats weren't hip, dig? They weren't getting down with the kids. Too square, man.

You say that music's for the birds,
And you can't understand the words?
Well, honey, if you did,
You'd really blow your lid,
'Cause, baby, that is rock and roll.

Far out, man... :)
