Charro-His most underrated movie

Postby Scooby » Tue Dec 27, 2016 10:53 pm

After watching this wonderful western last night in HD, I have come to the realization that this may be Elvis' finest dramatic role as an actor. There's no corny one liners by him or the all American boy image like in many of his films. And no boy meets girl, falls for girl then gets girl by singing to her in a sports car. We get to see a whole different side of the man than what we are all used to. Very seldome does he even smile. This role was perfect for Elvis. It showcased his skills and talent that Parker refused to let him display in his other movies, give or take a few., without having to sing corny songs to sell records as well as tickets. In fact, the entire cast was amazing! I have to say that this is Elvis' most underrated movie of his career.

I think CHARRO had great potential, but it's been watered down a little too much for my liking , but hey, at least there's a story going on.
As I've gotten older my main issue with it is the over use of the music, there's only so many times you can continue to use the same theme to create drama when there is none, it gets old with me personally.
A good film that could have been a lot better.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. I would rate Flaming Star as 10/10. Charro would get 5/10.

Charro could have been good but it has too many bad things going for it. A contemporary UK newspaper review called it 'ingenuous'. In other words, movie-making by numbers, with no subtlety. The lousy dialogue encourages wooden acting. As lousy as Dan's coffee (an over-repeated 'joke'). It begins straight away : "No, Charro" ; "No, Charro" ; "No, Charro" (or whatever).

The music is good and some scenes are good - especially the 'bump on your head' scene. The 'accuracy' of the cannon shots is a bit hard to believe, however. ("Don't hit the jail").

If doubters wanted to prove Elvis couldn't act, then this film is a gift. But nobody could act convincingly with that script and story. It could have been OK, I think, if made darker (story-wise) and without the various edits. It would have needed a better director and a much sharper script, though. The colour is rather strange, too.

Strangely enough, I do quite enjoy the film, mainly for nostalgic reasons and at least it's not studio-bound. Great title song and credits.

For me the storyline was good. The cast was also good but I have a problem with the film's background musical score as it's too dull and repetitious. Fallen asleep a few times watching it on the idiots box, as a result :D
