Elvis is perfect on this as are the Jordanaires and Hank Garland. I only heard the original version a couple of weeks ago. I had no idea it was a country song. Elvis' cover is so much better!

Elvis' version is out of this world, as had been "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" almost exactly four years earlier. In both cases, he took two slow sentimental songs and kicked them into The Twilight Zone of Big Beat Coolness.
At his very best, Elvis was truly unbeatable.
C'est très chic. I didn't know this one.
RCA Victor had already recorded and released an interesting version of this song in early 1953 by West Coast vocal group The Robins. This was one of the songs in their debut single for the label :

Elvis performed the song at his three 1961 live concerts. For the March show in Honolulu, there was Hank Garland again providing lead guitar work.

It's really nice to hear these different versions. I like the one by the Robins, but Elvis can't be beaten on this one. I love how he makes the lyrics fit the music in true Elvis style. Took me some time to figure out " now you say that we are through"
Interestingly the Doris Day album that featured a Fool Such as I also included Can't Help Falling in Love and Softly as I Leave You.

Boots Randolph did not enter the Elvis picture until the first post-Army sessions in 1960. Five years later, one of his albums featured an interesting version of the Hank Snow classic, as well as three future Elvis songs :
