During a live gig in 1958, Snow jokingly announced ‘I’m Moving On’ as a new single:

A cursory listen to The Box Tops' verison of "I'm Movin' On" and to Mark James' original of "Suspicious Minds", both tracks recorded in 1968 at American Sound Studios with the same musicians and under the same production team Elvis would use in early 1969, shows how artistically overrated Elvis' recordings with Chips Moman have always been.

A giant step forward from the movie years' garbage, of course. But not half as creative as many would lead us to believe.

Light years away from what he had done in Memphis a decade and a half earlier.

An interesting point. I was also surprised to hear how close Elvis’ version is to that of The Box Tops.

It’d be interesting to do a more comprehensive comparison of Elvis’ American Sound Studio recordings with other contemporary versions. To get a better picture of how innovative those sessions were (or not).

Elvis did perform this great song during in his Sun days as part of his live repertoire.

THAT'S THE VERSION I WANT TO HEAR!!!
she's well acquainted with a touch of the velvet hand, like a lizard on a window pane

Things need to be looked at in context.

Compared with the years of substandard soundtracks [which you mention] his work at American Sound was exemplary !

OK - a lot of it was derivative, but he brought his special touch to his versions.

I think the sessions were among his best ever.
