I Can Help _Billy Swan

Postby Steve Grayson '67 » Mon Sep 07, 2015 6:13 pm

William Lance "Billy" Swan (born May 12, 1942) is an American songwriter and country singer, best known for his 1974 single, "I Can Help".

Swan moved to Memphis to work with Black, but this was cut short with Black's illness and subsequent death in 1965.
He also for a time worked on Elvis Presley's Graceland estate.
He then moved to Nashville, which enabled him to write hit country songs for numerous artists, including Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, and Mel Tillis. In 1969, Swan first took on the role of record producer, producing Tony Joe White's Top Ten hit "Polk Salad Annie". Swan also played bass guitar for Kris Kristofferson, and then signed a solo recording deal with Monument Records

I've got Billy's album with I Can Help. Love his original, although the organ is a bit dodgy.

A cool video of Swan and band performing the song live on TV, as it was riding the charts in 1974 :

Elvis could have performed this song so much better had he been in a proper frame of mind. His vocal is very lazy on this.

Billy's I prefer.
she's well acquainted with a touch of the velvet hand, like a lizard on a window pane

That's for sure. Elvis' version is a little clumsy.

Elvis recorded his version in March 1975 and it was released two months later on the "Today" album.

Jerry Lee Lewis recorded a couple of takes in December of that year, but neither were released until several years later.

Take a listen, they're amazing - memorable line : "If your child needs a daddy, we can discuss that too" :

I prefer the slower tempo and I like the alternate better. The first one was too "JerryLeeLewised".
