In fact, all of the early versions of the song, from the Crudup original, through Elvis, Marty Robbins, etc. used the same wording - "That's All Right" - no "Mama", no "Alright", etc.

End of rant. :)

Indeed (see scan).

The December 1954 version by Marty Robbins includes that "I oughta mind my papa" verse that's absent from the Crudup and Elvis recordings :

Excerpts from Tony Plews’ essay ‘The Crudup Connection: 5th July 1954 revisted’

According to Tony Plews, Elvis didn’t just perform a cover of Crudup’s ‘That’s All Right’, but turned it into a medley of different Crudup hits. Here’s Tony’s detailed analysis:

Arthur Crudup's songs were all pretty similar.

In the absence of any sheet music, I reckon Elvis was singing what he recollected & simply mixed up some lyrics from different ones.

Rather than any sort of 'tribute' to the writer...

That’s how I see it too. Though Elvis must have known Crudup’s repertoire pretty well.
