John Lennon, 43 years later

Postby Mister Moon » Sat Dec 09, 2023 7:02 pm

John Lennon was killed 43 years ago, in the late hours of December 8, 1980. I remember that event very well.

Here in western Europe, it was sleepy time when he passed away, so we didn't get the news until early the next morning. I was 14 years old and had just started high school, and the word started spreading like fire among all the people there. It was just unbelievable.

Incidentally, one month earlier, I had lost my dear friend Carles due to a crazy accident. He was 14 too, and that left a deep mark in my soul. 1980 could not have ended worse.

So, suddenly, it was Lennon everywhere, and I got some of the stuff they put out, including a cool commemorative magazine, and his latest 45, ironically titled "(Just Like) Starting Over". I still have those items.

Oh well...

My sister was recently in New York. I asked her to go and see the Dakota hotel where John and Yoko lived. (Yoko still lives) it's a amazing building. One that will forever have the legacy of what happened that terrible day.

It's an imposing building. I went out there in the mid 80s and took a little trip on a tour bus which went past the Dakota building, and of course a couple of Elvis related spots.

I thought Yoko had moved out as it has become too much for her to maintain everything.

Have you folks seen Roman Polanski's 1968 film "Rosemary's Baby" ?

It's staged at the Dakota building. It's an unforgettable movie, which I have seen many times, with great acting by John Cassavetes and Mia Farrow, among others.

The evil Devil-worshipping members of the 'Satan' cult came over as such nice ordinary people !

Perhaps that was all part of their wicked plan...

One of our TV channels showed a movie called "Yesterday".
There is a worldwide black out and one guy mentiones The Beatles and nobody knows what he is talking about.
His Beatles records have vanished and he frantically starts to write the lyrcis of all their songs.
He is an unsuccesfull singer/songwriter but when he performs the songs written by The Beatles he becomes a world star.
But he is not happy.
He goes on a search and finds an 82 year old John Lennon, who never wrote music and never was in a band.
It's a comedy and a drama and a love story worth watching.

It's a beautiful building. And to see it so soon after John's death I can imagine it was very raw. I believe Yoko still owns the building. Some info here.

As I said, I was on the tour bus, but didn't even realise where I was, there was no guide, and before I knew it we were past the building. All I have is this crappy photo.

Spooky. That's the entrance, where they killed Lennon.
