Two threads on the same subject have been merged - CB

Oh man, here we go again. :)

So, I'm no longer the "topic author" of a topic I started in 2016, with more than half of its posts done by me after careful research in online magazine and newspaper archives.

Why don't we just use links when there are similar threads going on, so that they are connected between them, and everybody can dig each thread in its own glory ?

The other thread was posted earlier than 2016.

The idea was to have all the relevant posts within one thread.

This is a fantastic version. The master is hard to beat, a true classic, but this version is great.

There's also a little-known version of the master with less, or no, overdubs. I don't think it's available on YouTube and it has been released only in one CD that I know of :

I was speaking from memory, which is not always a good thing, especially as years go passing by, so I must correct myself.

The "demo" version of "Nervous Breakdown" was first released in 1996 on the "Cruisin' the Drive-In with Eddie Cochran & friends - Vol. 1" CD (Rockstar RSRCD-009) :

https://www.discogs.com/es/Eddie-Cochran-Cruisin-The-Drive-In/release/6418242

Then it was released again two years later on the "Don't Forget Me" CD (Rockstar RSRCD-014), a commemoratirve release for what would have been Eddie's 60th. birthday :

https://www.discogs.com/es/Eddie-Cochran-Dont-Forget-Me/release/10042486

The undubbed version of "Nervous Breakdown" was first released in 2005 on the "Portrait Of A Legend" CD (Rockstar RSRCD-026). This was an expanded version of an identically titled LP they released in 1984. The CD was available with two different covers.

This undubbed cut omits the handclaps and drums we hear on the master. There's only the basic track with Eddie's vocals and guitar and Connie "Guybo" Smith's electric bass :

This cut is also available on Bear Family's Eddie Cochran box-set.

We have discussed this matter more than once, and we are never going to agree, so I will not get into it again.

Front cover of a very rare Spanish single release from 1975. This is my scan of my own copy of the record. The b side is "C'mon Everybody" :

It's not really a "record", but a fragment of a series of private home recordings done by Eddie's friend and musician Chuck Foreman between 1953 and 1955, before Eddie became a professional artist. Those recordings were made available in their entirety for the first time in 1997 by the Rockstar label. "Hearts Of Stone" has been reissued several times since then, along with parts of the same batch of recordings.

When I hear material like that, I'm inclined to think Eddie would have followed the MOR route eventually.

I think that is correct. If he , or Holly, were not killed they would have evolved in the 1960s with mix of MOR and Rock and Roll, not unlike Elvis.

Buddy was certainly heading that way. I suspect that his and Eddie's careers would have faded a bit with the onslaught of the Beatles and all. They would have continued in the vein of Neil Sedaka, Bobby Vee, Del Shannon, maybe Roy Orbison, who seemed to rise above it a bit.
