Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell,
UK novelist, essayist, journalist, & critic.
His work is characterised by lucid prose, social criticism,
opposition to totalitarianism, & support of democratic socialism.
25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950.

Orwell produced literary criticism and poetry, fiction & polemical journalism.
He is known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) & the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1948).
His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working-class life in the industrial north of England, & Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences soldiering for the Republican faction of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), are as critically respected as his essays on politics and literature, language and culture.

Blair was born in India, & raised and educated in England.
After school he became an Imperial policeman in Burma, before returning to Suffolk, England, where he began his writing career as George Orwell—a name inspired by a favourite location, the River Orwell.
He lived from occasional pieces of journalism, & also worked as a teacher or bookseller whilst living in London.
From the late 1920s to the early 1930s, his success as a writer grew & his first books were published.
He was wounded fighting in the Spanish Civil War, leading to his first period of ill health on return to England.
During the Second World War he worked as a journalist & for the BBC.
The publication of Animal Farm led to fame during his life-time.
During the final years of his life he worked on Nineteen Eighty-Four, & moved between Jura in Scotland and London.
It was published in June 1949, less than a year before his death.

Kenneth Peacock Tynan - UK theatre critic & writer.
Making his initial impact as a critic at The Observer, he praised Osborne's Look Back in Anger (1956),
& encouraged the emerging wave of British theatrical talent.
In 1963, Tynan was appointed as the new National Theatre Company's literary manager.
An opponent of theatre censorship, Tynan is often believed to have been the first person to say "fuck" on British television,
during a live broadcast in 1965.
Later in his life, he settled in California, where he resumed his writing career.

Alice O'Connor [born Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum] pen name Ayn Rand - Russian-born US writer & philosopher.
She is known for her fiction & for developing a philosophical system she named Objectivism.
Born and educated in Russia, she moved to the United States in 1926.
After two early novels that were initially unsuccessful & two Broadway plays, she achieved fame with her 1943 novel, The Fountainhead.
In 1957, Rand published her best-known work, the novel Atlas Shrugged.
Afterward, until her death in 1982, she turned to non-fiction to promote her philosophy, publishing her own periodicals
& releasing several collections of essays.
