Turns out it's my hard drive which has died !

Nothing can be retrieved from it.

Ah well...

I'm sorry to hear that! If however the hard drive is still be recognized by the system, I would recommend you to try the OpenSource freeware "TestDisk". It saved my neck today, when a USB stick with very important data (and of course no backup...) crashed and both systems (I tried Windows and Linux) only suggested formatting...

Thanks for the interest, HillbillyCat, but I've got a computer engineer on the job who has fitted a new hard drive.
Fortunately, all my own personal files, like music, videos documents etc are on separate physical drives, so the problem can be solved.
My main concern is things like Malwarebytes & CC Cleaner.
Not too difficult to download the 'free' versions again, but I'd got paid ones !
